SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2012

This morning, Mom and Dad drove up from Sarasota to celebrate Christmas with me.  They picked me up at the seaport and we went to the restaurant at the Marriott hotel downtown (a short drive from the port).  We had a large booth and were able to have a lovely breakfast (the buffet was quite nice, complete with an omelette station) and were able to exchange gifts with each other.  After that, they took me to run a few last minute errands (Target, Staples, Best Buy) for Christmas.  Actually, Mom ran into Best Buy and bought the WHITE CHRISTMAS dvd I will give to Candi, the cruise director.  She’s never seen it!  OK, she’s Jewish and from South Africa, so both the “white” and “Christmas” part are a bit out of her upbringing, but as I’ve said before, she exudes Christmas.  When we were planning the holiday show for the ship, and she told me she had never seen the film, I knew I had to gift it to her this Christmas.

So, although I won’t be “home for the holidays,” (actually, they won't either, as after they dropped me back at the ship, they started their trek to Charlotte, NC to spend Christmas with Tim and Joey, the cat) I did get to have a little Christmas celebration w/ Mom and Dad today and it was wonderful!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2012

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas . . .

Since the beginning of the month, Christmas decorations have been popping up around the ship . . . poinsettias, Christmas trees, lights . . . it’s certainly not over-done, but it’s just a nice touch.  There was even a special “team” . . . the “Christmas Village Team” that made gingerbread villages for every restaurant and mess on the ship.  This is the grand atrium, complete with a train around the largest gingerbread village of them all.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2012

Happy Winter!  It sure doesn’t feel it when it’s 80 degrees, in Cozumel, Mexico, but I’ll tell you – it sure beats Rochester, NY (sorry, Rochester).  Christmas is coming . . .

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2012

The highlight of the day was watching Candi, who is Jewish, wrap boxes for the stage for our upcoming holiday show . . . “Holiday Extravaganza at Sea.”  I tell you, she exudes Christmas!!!

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2012

Tonight was the Entertainment Department Christmas party.  Candi threw a lovely gathering in the Teen Disco. I only stayed for about 45 minutes, as, by 12:15am, I was still battling a headache, had fallen asleep waiting for the party to begin at 11:30pm, and am still fighting this darned cold.  It was a lovely evening though, and from what I understand, the theme of “Naughty or Nice” was played out quite well until the party ended at 2am.

Here, Candi the kitty is checking out some packages . . . namely those of Johnny, the Assistant Cruise Director, and Kyle & Zach, our two gymnast/aerialists.  In all fairness, there was a lot of that happening . . . she's the only one I was able to catch in the act.

And the cast of The Second City all donned their . . . well, not gay apparel, but their mustaches.  Allegedly, there are other photos that were taken throughout the night, but are not proper for posting here . . . OY VEY!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2012

One of these days, I WILL get off the ship in Roatan, Honduras . . .

MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2012

Joey (I furthered the name to Joseph Daniel), the cat that my parents and brother rescued 11+ years ago, in the summer of 2001, has cancer. He’s lived with my brother in the winter months, and at the lake home with “Grammy & Grampy” ever since.  So sad . . . even I like the little guy!

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2012

Today was spent, once again, at Target, this time with Candi.  We had some soup & salad at Whole Foods, downstairs, then did some Christmas shopping.  Candi is very much like Carrie Bradshaw from Sex & The City . . . she is a shoe-a-holic!  Before we had lunch & hit Target, she dropped into DSW and would you believe it . . . she exited empty-handed!  Now, that’s only because as she walked through the aisles, she found herself saying “I have that, I have that in purple, I have those in black, etc.”

I had my weekly chat with Mom & Dad, as well as a few others, including my buddy, Phylis, who is watching my condo for me, and once again . . . I do NOT like only having phone service once a week.

It was another beautiful day for the Sail Away party pool-side and the week seems to be off to a good start . . . hooray!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2012

How is December half over?!?!?  There are only TEN shopping days until Christmas!  Boy, time does fly!!!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2012

Guacamole . . . MMMMM!
Candi, Matt, Clair

It was a glorious day in Cozumel, Mexico and I had the honor of having lunch ashore with three lovely ladies . . . Candi (Captain Pain, my cruise director), Clair (Guest Services Manager for the Norwegian Dawn), and Kinsey (Norwegian Star Entertainment Administrator).  We had a fabulous lunch of homemade guacamole, margaritas, soup, and fajitas at a restaurant off the beaten path, called La Chosa. I have no doubt it will become a regular Friday excursion . . . at least those Fridays when we dock, rather than tender to shore.

Kinsey & Candi
After lunch, Clair and I went on a little shopping excursion.  Her boyfriend collects knives (no, not the kind one uses in a kitchen, but rather, the kind Michael Douglas used to cut through the Colombian jungles in Romancing the Stone).  So, we went on a trek to find a Christmas present for Clair’s boyfriend, who, incidentally, boards the Dawn on Sunday, as the Staff Captain (#2 in charge).  We ended up finding a really cool knife with a wooden (cherry, maybe?) handle, and brass trim in a leather sheath.  Then, there was a smaller knife, of the same design, on top of the big one.  It was a great find and I think I’m as excited as Clair is to have him open it on Christmas day.

I had to get a photo w/ this tree for my friend Carol Blanchard - she loves pink flamingos!
On the way back to the ship, Clair and I stopped and very briefly put our feet into the water.  Walking along the pier on the way back to the ship, in the sunshine, with a lovely breeze blowing, and blue water all around me, I had a realization that I have one of the coolest walks “to the office” that one could ask to have.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2012

Again, not too much to say.  Another day on the ship.  I am enjoying my job though, and am grateful for the work and the experience . . .

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2012

Today was more or less an “average” day.  Nothing too exciting to report.  I recorded the second performance of Arte Diem for them.  Not much to say.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2012

Well, Captain Pain has done it.  Since I had my medical exam/mini-physical at the end of October, I’ve lost 10 pounds.  I think it’s likely that the majority, if not all, of it has been lost in the past 3+ weeks that I’ve been on the ship, as I’ve noticed my clothes fitting looser and looser (some of which I just bought prior to boarding on Nov. 18.  I’ve been relatively good with my diet, and exercising daily obviously works.  Who knew?!?!?!

MONDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2012

Bye bye “THE V-SHOW,” and hello “PURE VARIETY.”  Yup, a name change.  And I honestly like the new name better.  To me, THE V-SHOW sounded like it was a show about . . . well . . . um . . . lady parts!  And PURE VARIETY has a nice ring to it.  We received these lovely new marquee posters yesterday, when in Tampa.  They were a bit too large for the marquee openings, so I had a bit of fun with a razor blade and a straight edge.  Tonight’s two performances were once again well received, and I think this is such a fun way to start off the week, as far as entertainment is concerned.  At the end, the cast exits through the aisles in the house, so on their way out of the theater, guests are able to meet cast members, which adds a nice touch.  And yes, I know the poster is grammatically incorrect . . . I pointed it out, but it’s December and there’s no money left in the budget at this time of year . . . ah well.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2012

This morning, the Technical Supervisor, Michael Pullon, with whom I’ve been working for the past several weeks left.  Fortunately, his replacement, Ed Pabalan, seems really nice, and also competent, so I’m looking forward to working with him.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get to say goodbye to Michael but I will email him in a few days, once he gets home to the Philippines and has a chance to unwind.

This morning, a major fog rolled into the Tampa Bay area.  We JUST made it under the Sunshine Skyway and into the channel, barely ahead of the fog.  Unfortunately, the Carnival Legend, which is in port with us on Sundays, was not as lucky.  It takes three hours to get from the Sunshine Skyway to the dock.  At 2pm, the Legend was finally able to start its treck into the port, but that caused us to not sail away until 6:30pm (as opposed to our scheduled 4pm departure).  It didn’t really affect us much, but I am sure glad I wasn’t on the Legend . . . they docked about 5pm, had to debark all of their passengers, turn the ship over, and load on all of the new passengers for that week’s cruise.  I later heard they left about midnight that night . . . with what I assume were very cranky guests.  YIKES!

I spent the day with Mom and Dad, who drove up (through the fog) from Sarasota.  We went to breakfast at . . . I think it was an Original Pancake House, then did some shopping at Target, where we ran into several members of the production cast.  We then went to Whole Foods, right below Target, where I spent about an hour (on free wifi) grading final projects for the online Theatre Appreciation course I’m teaching for Broward College.  We then drove back to Tampa, walked around Channelside a bit (lots of empty storefronts) and then drove around Harbor Island briefly.  They dropped me back at the ship about 2:30pm and headed back to Sarasota.  It was great fun to see them, albeit briefly.  I think we’re doing it again, to celebrate Christmas, either Dec. 23 or 30.  I’ll have to remember my camera that day.

It was a pretty standard Sunday afternoon/evening . . . the Sail Away Party (with the production cast performing their “Let’s Get Loud” number) on the pool deck and two (7pm and 9pm) Welcome Aboard shows.  This starts my fourth full week, so I like to think I’m no longer a “newbie,” yet still learning lots and enjoying the work and the life.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2012

Candi and I were supposed to get back into our Insanity workout today, but her knee is still a bit swollen, so we postponed until tomorrow and did an hour of power walking around the promenade deck this afternoon.  It was a BEAUTIFUL day, with calm seas, clear skies, and a balmy breeze.  In the distance, we were able to see a Holland America ship.

Tonight we performed BOLLYWOOD again, on its new night.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2012

. . . a date that will live in infamy.  Having been to Pearl Harbor back in January, it felt a little bit more meaningful today . . . at least I have a personal connection now and the visuals aren’t just from photographs and film . . .

Well I was supposed to do Day #4 of Insanity with Candi at 10:30 this morning; however, her knee was really bothering her, so we took a day off . . . and instead, did 40 minutes of power walking around the promenade deck (Deck #7).  We are docked at Cozumel (a treat, as we were originally to tender, but there was an open dock slip) and the sun is shining, there’s a light breeze, and the water is BLUE, BLUE, BLUE!  After the power walk, I took a shower, and headed ashore for lunch with Tiger Martina, the director of THE V-SHOW and BOLLYWOOD, and Ruben Delgado, the Technical Supervisor, with whom I worked, and became friends with, in Tampa.  We went to “No Name Bar,” which is the “crew hangout” for all of the ships that port in Cozumel.  I think the entire production cast of the Norwegian Dawn was there, celebrating Vlad’s (dancer) birthday.  Ruben had a massage at the attached spa that morning and wanted to extend but couldn’t, so he pre-paid for another 30-minute massage at 1pm, but ended up giving it to me at the last minute, which was a TERRIFIC surprise.  Oh, his lovely wife, Bree, a director/choreographer with whom I also worked in Tampa was also there today.  It was great to see them again.  Lunch never quite happened, but two margaritas and three shots of tequila did.  This cast doesn’t seem to understand that even though THEY are off on Friday nights, some of us still have to work.  And I’m not 22 anymore . . . I can’t keep up.  Still, it was a lovely day and great fun.  Needless to say, I took a little nap when I returned to the ship!

Back in Tampa, there was a day where the two gymnasts didn’t have to attend rehearsal.  At the end of the day, I had announcements for the whole cast and for some reason, I could not think of the word “gymnast.”   As a result, after I made my announcements to the cast, I asked that they please pass the information on to . . . um . . . the . . . uh . . . the bouncing boys.  Well, it stuck, and ever since, Kyle and Zach have been the bouncing boys.  Here they are doing their fancy work at a pier in Cozumel, and then posing with me.  Ummmm, thank goodness I’m on this workout kick . . . I don’t like looking so fat next to them!

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2012

Well, I do feel better today, as far as the cold is concerned.  And my back feels MUCH better, though I am still sore . . . but it’s a “good sore.”

This afternoon, Candi and I did day 3 of Insanity. This photo pretty much sums up how I feel.

Tonight we performed BAND ON THE RUN (the first show we rehearsed in Tampa, directed/choreographed by the wonderful Ricky Whitfield) and then had the White Hot Party.  I wore my white duds, and went for ONE drink . . . and then Clair, the Guest Services Manager, of whom I am very fond, convinced me to have another.  Darn, I am weak!  When it was time for round three, with Clair, Candi, and the Assistant Cruise Director, Johnnie, I excused myself, retired to my cabin, started to watch an episode of THE GOLDEN GIRLS, and after about 10 minutes turned it off, as I was rapidly falling asleep.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2012

Drat!  I have a cold.  I felt it coming on last night and was hoping it was just allergies, but alas, this morning, when I woke up, there was phlegm galore!  And I am a wee bit sore in the legs and lower back from yesterday’s Insanity workout.  Ouch!

I made it through day #2 of Insanity, with some modifications, of course, but I did it.  Candi, the cruise director, used to be a physical fitness coach/trainer/instructor/etc. and is a great motivator to keep me going . . .

Arte Diem performed their shows again tonight, and once again, Wednesdays proved to be a great night for them!  They incorporated many of the suggestions I gave them and the show flowed better.  Once again, standing ovations.  They’re such a talented group, and so gracious and kind.

OK, by 8pm, I could barely walk – my legs were OK . . . sure, my calves were sore, but it’s the lower left side of my back.  If you’ve ever pulled your back, where standing up straight is a challenge . . . well, that’s where I was tonight.  By the time I crawled into bed at 8:40pm (yes, that early – trying to kill this cold as quickly as possible), it was a challenge to just get in and out of it . . . not to mention the chore that was taking off shoes and socks!  OY!  Thank goodness for a little glass of wine and two episodes of THE GOLDEN GIRLS!  After that, I was ready for a deep sleep, to which I drifted off around 9:30pm and slept until 8:00am the next morning!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2012

The cruise director, Candi Finkelstein, is a fantastic woman from Johannesburg, South Africa.  When not on a ship, she makes her home in Hollywood, Florida, and we actually frequent several of the same food & beverages establishments in the greater Fort Lauderdale area.  She is great fun, and has been so kind to me ever since I returned to the Dawn . . . actually, she was lovely when I was here as an independent contractor too.  She LOVES her shoes and has quite the collection . . . Carrie Bradshaw would be proud!

When in college at Fredonia, there was a song called "Pata Pata," by a South African artist and for the first several days, I kept hearing a line play over and over in my head.  Well, I found it on itunes and downloaded it . . . www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCc61z9IFu4

With that said, as of today, I USED to like Candi.  Today, she had me start the insanity workout program – it is so aptly named!  I can feel the burn and am NOT excited about waking up tomorrow morning.  I may need a bevy of sailors to lift me out of bed.  OK, in all reality, I did modify it at times, but I made it through the whole thing . . . my goal is to drop all of the weight I’ve gained over the past several years, and then some, while toning & defining my muscles.  By the time I finish this contract on May 3, I’d like to be able to throw away the fat clothes I have with me, and fit into my fun, thin clothes that are in the back of my closet at home.  Time will tell . . .

MONDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2012

I don’t have much to report today.  I have started my third week and am feeling caught up & organized, so I’m looking forward to far fewer hours and being able to simply do my job, without a constant shuffle of organization, etc.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2012

One day a week of phone service is not enough!  I don’t like being “cut off” from friends & family 6 out of 7 days a week.

Today was rather uneventful . . . I ran errands again in Tampa during the day (every time I am in Target, I am “nostalgic” for “normalcy” on the main land – but I’m happy to return to the ship and the life it holds for me), and then was back on board by 3pm, for our 4pm Sail Away party on the pool deck.  The production cast performs a number, “Let’s Get Loud,” and then dances with guests for a bit, before heading to the tech rehearsal for that evening’s Welcome Aboard Show.  It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day – perfect for the Sail Away Party.

I’ll take photos at a future date . . .

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2012

Back in Tampa, in October, I kept hearing about “the I-95” on the ship.  Living in South Florida, and using I-95 on nearly a daily basis, I was incredibly confused.  Well, lo and behold, all of Norwegian’s ships have it.  It’s on the top crew deck (which on the Dawn is deck 4 on the starboard (right) side, and runs from the bow (front) to the stern (back) of the ship.  It’s essentially the main thoroughfare for the crew.  So, while in reality it’s not terribly exciting, its name still cracks me up every time I hear it.  And this sign is on the wall, mid-ship, of the I-95.  Oh, today is the last day of my second week . . . only 70-something hours this week!

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2012

I finally went ashore in my first foreign port . . . Cozumel, Mexico!  I was supposed to have lunch with the cruise director, but unfortunately, she was held up and unable to make it ashore.  Regardless, I went alone, found a restaurant off the beaten path, had some guacamole and chips, some corn quesadillas with cheese and shrimp, and a few margaritas.  I practiced my Spanish with my waiter, Francisco, and he, his English with me.

In addition, today is PAY DAY!  After 4 years of struggling, it is a wonderful feeling to have a decent paycheck with which to pay bills and still have a bit left over!

From a visitors guide (www.dsdmexico.com) . . . and with proper grammatical changes . . . the history of Cozumel, which I include not to bore my readers, but to include, as this is also my "journal," of sorts . . .

The first Mayans settled in Cozumel 2,000 years ago; however, during the classic period 300-900 A.D. – a time when priests were at the top of the social hierarchy in the Maya world and life revolved around religious ceremonies – Cozumel became one of the most important sanctuaries in the Yucatan region.  Cozumel derives its name from the Mayan words Cuaam (swallow) and Lumil (land of), which form the word Cazamil (land of swallows).  The Mayan word changed with time to the Spanish name of Cozumel.  The Mayans believed the island to be a sacred shrine.

Religious pilgrimages were common to the island, especially from women who were either pregnant, or wanted to get pregnant.  They paid homage to the goddess Ix Chel, the deity of the moon, pregnancy, and childbirth.  It was a tradition among the Maya People in general to make the trip at least once in their lifetime to the shrine of this goddess.  By 1200, in Middle America, there existed an important long distance trade in which Cozumel was a key link.  It was on this island where all kinds of merchandise arrived from far-away places.  Goods were temporarily stored before being sent in canoes to other distribution points.  It was by 1518 that the Spanish explorer, Juan de Grijalva, arrived to the coast of the island on Holy Cross Day (May 3rd), named this land as “Isla de la Santa Cruz,” and proclaimed the land as property of the Dona Johanna and Don Carlos, Kings of Spain.  The Spanish arrived to Cozumel on May 6, making a peaceful stop on the island, received by the locals, exchanging gold and a variety of goods.

Juan de Grijalva ordered the chaplain, Juan Diaz, to offer a mass on the same place that the islanders had a temple.  Therefore, on May 6th, the first Catholic ceremony was held in Mexico, at a location named by the Spanish-like Saint John (currently named Las Casitas (little houses), where every year, mass is still celebrated by the locals.  The visit was followed a year later be Hernan Cortes.  Cozumel was the first site touched by the army of Hernan Cortes, in what is now Mexican territory, becoming the starting point for the conquest of Mexico.

The Mayan ruler of Cozumel accepted their domination peacefully.  The conqueror proceeded to destroy many of the Mayan temples.  By the time Cortes left Cozumel, the ancient civilization lie in ruins.  At the same time, an outbreak of smallpox killed thousands.

By 1525, Francisco de Montejo made a request to the king of Spain to authorize the conquest and development of the Isla of Cozumel (Montejo was one of the captains that arrived with Cortez 9 years prior).  Don Francisco de Montejo arrived in Cozumel on September 29, 1527, and gave the Christian name of San Miguel de Cozumel.   As the Spaniards became more familiar with the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, they realized they did not have to stop over in Cozumel, excluding it as a port of call for Spanish ships.  At the same time, as an immediate effect of the conquest, Mayan trade was nullified and the cult of the goddess Ix Chel suppressed.

The islanders, deprived of their principal economic activity, were forced to depend only on agriculture for their survival.  The mestizos founded San Miguel on the west coast and the Mayans settled at El Cedral.  From the mid-19th Century to the beginning of the 20th, Cozumel’s economy boomed and it became and important port.

The depression (1930’s) seriously affected the island economically, but it bounced back during World War II, and was “put on the map.”  The U.S. built an air base for planes hunting U-boats in the mid-Atlantic, and an airport was built.

Drawn by the clear waters, frogmen came to train and returned home with stories of magnificent underwater vistas.  Jacques Cousteau’s declarations in 1960, about the richness of the coral reef surrounding the island, made underwater enthusiasts aware of Cozumel’s existence.  By 1970, Cozumel’s population quickly grew to 10,000, and today, the island boasts a population of more than 75,000.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2012

Because of one of our gymnasts being out of commission this week, we had to juggle the performance schedule around.  In addition, since the understudy contingency plan hadn’t been provided (until now, due to the gymnast being out), we had to cancel this week’s performances of BOLLYWOOD.  So, tonight, we presented a “Vocal Variety Show” featuring the 4 production cast singers, Margie Hobbs (the band master), Ruby Monserate (one of the cruise staff), and the show band.  With one rehearsal in the afternoon to put it together, it ended up being a FANTASTIC evening of music.  We only did a 7pm show, and I wish I had taken pictures . . . Juanito, the lighting technician on board did a phenomenal job lighting each singer, to enhance the mood, and Tim, the sound technician on board mixed the music beautifully.  It was “on the fly,” but boy, as an evening of entertainment, it truly flew!  BRAVO to all!

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2012

Well, one of our two gymnasts, Kyle, is out of commission this week due to a medical issue.  Fortunately, he’ll be OK, but it required a shuffling around of our performances.  He was out of the “Vacation” bumper on Sunday evening, and then out of THE V-SHOW on Monday night.  Jalynn sang “Defying Gravity” without Kyle doing the aerial hoop routine, and the straps number that Kyle and Zach do was cut.  The audience didn’t know any better, and the cast and crew all did a wonderful job cutting and pasting where there was a void before the finale number.

Tonight, Arte Diem (www.hannatimo.com) performed, instead of Saturday, where they have been performing.  They received a standing ovation after each performance, and it seems that Wednesday night is a well-received night for them.  It looks like we may keep them on Wednesdays.  I took some notes on their show, after having seen it last week, and will meet with them later this week to share my thoughts on how they might improve a bit.  They are a WONDERFUL and talented group of 4 entertainers, and yearn to constantly improve their show.  I’m flattered that they want my opinions.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2012

OK, so it was a week ago, but I had my photo taken for the officers “who’s who” board.  While it is a minor thing, with approximately 1,100 crew members, I am flattered to be one of the two dozen (plus) who are included on this board.  I’m on the far right side, on the second to bottom row.  My name is listed as “Matthew” and I’m hoping to have that changed, but I think it may be a while from now . . . if I lose the weight I am hoping to lose, I’ll probably ask to have my photo re-taken, and at that point, change the name to Matt.  Nonetheless, it’s still pretty cool, I do have to admit.  He he he . . .

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2012

The Norwegian Dawn entered service in 2002.  It is 965 feet long, has a maximum beam of 105 feet, has a top speed of 25 knots, has a gross tonnage of 92,250, has 15 guest decks with a double occupancy of 2, 224, and flies under a Bahamian flag.

The ship’s godmother is Kim Cattrall, and was inaugurated in New York City.

Other fun facts about Norwegian Cruise Line . . .

  • It was established in 1966 when one of Norway’s most respected shipping companies, Klosters Rederi A/S, acquired the M/S Sunward and repositioned the ship from Europe to the then obscure Port of Miami.  The name of the company, at that time, was Norwegian Caribbean Line.

  • NCL was the first to launch a single-class atmosphere of informal luxury.  This was a new concept in the industry.  It meant that cruises to the Caribbean were no longer simply a means of transportation, but the ship itself became a destination to offer guests an exciting and affordable alternative to land-based resorts.

  • The company changed its name to Norwegian Cruise Line in 1987.

  • In 2000, the company introduced the innovative “Freestyle Cruising,” challenging the conventional model of the cruise product, allowing a more relaxed, resort-styled vacation, with the option to eat when and where you want, and to participate in the activities you want, when you want.  It also eliminated many of the “formalities” and “rigidity” of other cruise lines.

  • From June 20-24, 2005, Live with Regis and Kelly, hosted by Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa became the first nationally syndicated TV program to broadcast a full week of shows from aboard a cruise ship.  It was on the inaugural voyage of the Pride of America, which traveled from NYC down the eastern seaboard.

  • In 2011, CBS’ Undercover Boss featured an episode with NCL’s CEO Kevin Sheehan.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2012

I got off the ship today!  I went to Target to buy some additional items I felt I wanted for my cabin (air fresheners), and such.  It was nice to be on land, albeit for a short time.  As I head into week #2, I feel much more “settled” and though I am not really doing “catch up,” but able to focus on the daily, weekly, and monthly tasks at hand.

Because I am a manager, I am in an officer’s cabin on deck 4.  I’m in Cabin 4256.  I have a porthole!  WOO HOO!  While it is much larger than some cabins on here, and I live alone (I can’t imagine being in a 4-berth, or worse yet, a 6-berth cabin), it is still small.  I haven’t hung up any personal decorations, as I didn’t bring any, but since I don’t spend too much time in here, it isn’t bothering me yet.  These photos will give you an idea of the size . . . the bathroom is the worst . . . if working with fit, twenty-somethings isn’t enough motivation to get in shape, the size of my shower sure is.  I took a “floor” picture so you can see just how small it is . . . for anyone who knew my shower in my NYC apartment, this makes that look like the Taj Mahal!

My cabin steward, Ralph, is great.  His birthday was during my first week here and I got wind of it, so I gave him his weekly tip early, along with a birthday card and a balloon that I left on his supply cart in the hallway.  The next day I started getting a washcloth “candle” in my bathroom.  Later in the week, I didn’t get it one day and busted his chops about it.  The next day I had a monkey hanging from my curtains . . . he cracks me up as he “hangs around” and looks over my cabin.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19 - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2012

OK, so basically, this week was a complete overwhelming whirlwind of activity, and thus my lack of writing here.  My time sheet had me working 87.5 hours.  I’m sure it was more than that with “work topics” creeping into conversations all the time.  In addition to doing my job, I’ve spent a lot of time organizing, filing, cleaning, throwing away triplicates of papers, etc.  Regardless, I am very happy with the work and ship life feels “natural.”  Actually, this whole experience has felt as natural as it could, and as though this is where I’m supposed to be, and what I’m supposed to be doing right now.

Thanksgiving was uneventful . . . one of the biggest disappointments was not being able to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.   I did have a turkey dinner in the Officers' Mess . . . oh, that's something that's sort of exciting . . . I get to eat in the Officers' Mess because of my managerial position.  I am a 2.5 striped "officer."  How weird is that?!?!  Thankfully I didn't have to do boot camp!

My current itinerary is:

Sunday – Tampa, FL
Monday – Sea Day
Tuesday – Roatan, Honduras
Wednesday – Belize City, Belize
Thursday – Costa Maya, Mexico
Friday – Cozumel, Mexico
Saturday – Sea Day

No seasickness, and I haven’t been off the ship all week.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2012

“Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”  Isn’t that the truth!  Well, back when I was in Tampa, in October, I had the honor of being offered an Entertainment Production Manager position on the Norwegian Sun, to begin November 25 (and scheduled through early May).  Well, while I was home the week of November 11, I was asked to return to the Norwegian Dawn and serve in the same capacity on that vessel.  I was thrilled to return to the ship where I had just been, with the marvelous cast I had been working with all of October, and the first half of November.  It was a whirlwind getting here, but I am thrilled to be back!

*This is my second name tag . . . the first was "Matthew."  Name tags are created using one's full, legal name; however, when I explained that I have always gone, and continue to go, by "Matt," the staff captain approved this one.  Hooray!
