WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 2013

The air quality on a cruise ship is not wonderful for someone who suffers from allergies.  Re-circulated air is just "blah."  I need to make a point of getting out in the sunshine and fresh air more often.  Perhaps that is a new year's resolution of mine.  We shall see.

Tonight I had dinner at Moderno Churrascaria, the Brazilian steakhouse (photo above) with Natalie Hammond, a lovely, blonde Australian, who is a member of the cruise staff.  She reminds me a lot of my friend Jamie Day.  We had a lovely dinner, but I have had a cough all day, presumably from these allergies.  Early to bed in the hope that it'll quickly pass . . .

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
WOW . . . 2013!

MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2012

One of the things I thought about . . . I don’t say I worried about it, or even feared it . . . but did think about, before starting this journey, was how I would react/adapt to living on a ship.  I suppose I’d call myself a “home body,” even though I do enjoy going out for outings, meals, events . . . but when it all comes down to it . . . ultimately, I enjoy being home in my own “castle” for the night.  While I certainly don’t live in Shangri La, I do like my little condo, and feel as though it is very “homey” and “me.”  So, going to live in a hotel for a month, followed by 6 months living in a single-room cabin on a ship did raise some questions.  As I’ve written before, I am fortunate in the fact that I have my own cabin, and that it’s an officer’s cabin, so it’s somewhat of a good size – college dorm size.  The funny thing is, I didn’t bring any pictures or personal effects.  I have a little toy dachshund dog that my friend, Leigh, gave me, that sits on my desk.  Otherwise, my walls are bare, except for a panoramic print of NYC with this ship in the foreground that was in the cabin when I arrived, and a little calendar w/ my dad’s business card on it.  I do also have a photo of a dolphin jumping out of the water that I printed on a black and white computer just for shits & giggles . . . actually there is a story behind that, but I’ll save it for another posting.  So, other than that, the walls are bare.  And surprisingly, it doesn’t really bother me.  I suppose it’s two-fold . . . one, I don’t spend a whole lot of time in my cabin . . . I’m pretty much here to sleep, shower, change, and poop.  Although lately I have been taking some time to myself and unwinding by watching some TV at night, before bed, rather than staying in a bar.  And I guess number two is that it just isn’t “home.”  Don’t get me wrong – I feel as though this is where I’m supposed to be right now, but I just haven’t made it “home,” and for the first time that I can remember, I’m OK with that.  Still, I did put up the Christmas cards that were sent to Mom & Dad, and given to me on Dec. 23.  That’s the photo here.  They came down today, so I’m back to “normal” . . . whatever that is in this situation.

Tonight we had music happening all around the ship, in various venues.  The production cast performed PURE VARIETY at 7pm and 9pm.  The big party is up on the pool deck – a lovely ¾+ moon shone and a balmy tropical breeze blew.  Party favors and silly hats were abound, and the Cruise Director did a countdown 10 seconds before midnight. At midnight, the big old horn blew and the party raved on.  At 12:30am, we turned our clocks back an hour (we do that weekly, as we head west, to Central America) and the whole hoopla happened again a second time, at the “new” midnight.  I was in bed for that one.  Once is MORE than enough for me!

OK, now I’ve done New Year’s Eve on a ship.  It’s no more and no less exciting than it is on land.  Thank goodness it only comes once a year!

WEEKS UNTIL MOM & DAD SAIL!!!  HOORAY!!!!!!!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2012

It’s been a long week, but a very positive experience for our guests (and entertainment staff).  Now we prepare for the New Year . . . my favorite (dripping with sarcasm) holiday ever!  Amateur night at the Apollo . . . oh goodie . . . and the only way to escape is overboard . . . OY!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2012

I went ashore (Cozumel) today and had lunch at La Choza.  I went alone and was quite content.  I’m looking forward to taking Mom & Dad in a few weeks.  After lunch, I walked back to the ship and took a lovely siesta (nap).  And for the record . . . margaritas really DO taste better in Mexico!  Ole!

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2012

Would you believe there was another party tonight?!?!?  Tonight was the crew Christmas party.  I skipped it, as it didn’t begin until 11pm – I went to bed and was quite content.  Zzzzzzzzzz . . .

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2012

For the holiday season, the various departments were challenged to create a “trash formation” Christmas tree.  The week of the Christmas cruise, the guests voted on the best.  The production cast’s tree (made of soda cans) didn’t make it into the top 3, but they still had a great time creating it and were proud of their work (as they should’ve been).

This afternoon was the crew Christmas lunch in the Venetian (main) dining room.  It was quite nice, though I didn’t make it until the very end and it was pretty empty by then.  Ah well, duty called.

Tonight we performed a version of the “Holiday Extravaganza at Sea” for the crew, though it was much naughtier than yesterday’s.  There were things that would’ve made the Virgin Mary and the Baby Jesus not only blush, but fall over backwards!  OY!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

This morning, any members of the cruise staff who wanted to were able to be a part of a white elephant gift exchange.  That’s where anyone who participates buys a gift under a certain dollar amount and puts it into the mix.  Everyone participating draws a number.  Number one chooses and opens a gift.  Number two may either “steal” number one’s gift, or choose and open another, wrapped gift.  It goes on down the line until the last person.  While there were only 6 of us who participated, it was lots of fun.  We had some baked goods and such too.  It was a fun way to start the day.

Tonight at 7pm and 9pm, we performed our “Holiday Extravaganza at Sea.”  This was the holiday show that was put together over the past few weeks and included the Production Cast, the Show Band, Margie Hobbs and Nathaniel Reed (piano bar entertainers), and Ruby Monserate (a member of the Cruise Staff).  It was a fantastic show and the guests loved it.  The finale was “White Christmas,” where it “snowed” over the audience.  It was a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday.

Later that night, Candi and I passed through the Grand Atrium and had our photo taken . . . clearly the crew member who took it had a bit too much eggnog!

Tomorrow, Desmond Hurt is being medically disembarked, so the cast decided to do their secret Santa gift exchange tonight.  The wardrobe supervisor made little stockings for everyone and the area outside of the dressing rooms is all decorated.  They wore their pajamas tonight and had their Christmas celebration.

I started it off with homemade travel mugs for everyone.  The only difference was the name in the star, as it was personalized for each.  I gave those out, along with a card to each, and then left them to their devices.  From what I heard, they had a great time and were at it until about 1am, I think.

I hope Santa finds us out in the Gulf of Mexico . . .
